“WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW “

It’s a old adage known by many and dismissed by most. But here is something I know for a fact because I was there.

Twenty-five years ago, as my mother was dying of old age, our minister came to her bedside and read a Psalm to her.  She listened quietly and then said: “Those are good words.”    She died peacefully soon after that.

Now, I don’t know exactly which good words she was referring to.   Most likely, it was the totality of the Psalm and the ministerial care that comforted her, touched her soul, and allowed her to leave this world gracefully.

I also know this for sure:  Right at this very moment, there are three good words being bandied about in our country. They are: diversity, equity and inclusion.  In many ways, those three words have defined us through our actions, deeds and souls for as long as we can remember.

Now, sadly, those three words are under the serious threat of being “purged” from many of our country’s guidelines and initiatives   If that happens, they will eventually be purged from our very souls.

And so, we’re forced to wonder?  Are we at a place where those three good words now tell us who we WERE?  As opposed to re-enforcing who we ARE?

I’m concerned that if we continue down that dark and dangerous path, we may not be able find our way back. And, yes, I broke the rule I started with. I wrote about what I don’t know. But, I do know that nobody knows where all this is going. We must pay close attention. Our souls are counting on us.
